ProMPEG FEC is now available

The Pro-MPEG Code of Practice #3 Release 2 FEC is now available in all Scilla products that offer Transport Stream over RTP as input or output option.

While Broadcast-quality streaming requires error-free and jitter-free distribution networks, IP networks may still suffer from occasional delays due to dynamic queuing in routers and switches. In addition, these networks can experience occasional packet loss and reordering due to link layer failures which may result in temporary interruption of service or rerouting of packets.

ProMPEG CoP #3 uses the RTP transport protocol as a building block for providing packet recovery in order to ensure reliable real-time media transport on IP based networks. The FEC packets are played out along with the original media packets on three separate UDP ports.

RTP stream clients that support ProMPEG CoP #3 can use the additional FEC packets to recover from packet loss or excess packet delay which may occur typically when using the UDP protocol for packet transport.
